Turning surfaces into stories
At Focal Studios, we use projection mapping to reimagine how people experience space. By combining creative vision with technical precision, we transform buildings, objects, and environments into moving works of art. Each project is designed to captivate audiences and connect them emotionally to your story, whether that’s a large-scale public event, an immersive installation, or a brand activation that stops people in their tracks.
Our team of specialists brings together decades of experience in animation, light, and spatial design. We’ve delivered projection mapping projects for global brands, cultural institutions, and live events across the UK and beyond, tailoring every element from concept to playback. The result is always the same: unforgettable experiences that make an impact long after the lights fade.

FAQS
Projection mapping is a unique and cutting-edge technology that transforms flat surfaces into dynamic, interactive experiences. It can be used in a variety of settings such as advertising, events, entertainment, and much more.
3D projection mapping is utilising video projectors to create remarkable content that fits the geometry of any space. Effectively turning the whole world into a canvas. It is our mission to showcase the potential it has and use technology to embed creativity onto the physical world.
We use our technological expertise to create media that augments and interacts with the architecture of buildings, the contours of sculptures, or the corners of unusual spaces.
Our team of experience designers and content creators craft bespoke immersive storytelling for all manner of clients, including:
• Museums
• Visitor Attractions
• Theme Parks
• Brand Experiences
• Discovery Centres
• Live Events
• Theatres
• Art installations
• Leisure & Resort Destinations
• Retail spaces
Any surface is our canvas.
Reflective surfaces such as glass pose their own challenges, due to how they reflect and refract light, but through applying projection-ready materials, we can bring these to life.
Another consideration is the ‘throw’ distance (the distance between the projector and the surface itself). The size and volume of a space will be considered when specifying the number and brightness of projectors required. This is especially true if you want a 3D object projected on all sides.
Finally, audience perspective is always accounted for in any projection mapping project. Creating spectacular illusions requires great attention to detail and planning.

Yes, we offer content creation and animation services for projection mapping purposes. We will work closely with you to construct a visually coherent, narrative-led production that encompasses the existing architecture of the building, structure or object that will be projected onto.
Projection mapping relies on there being an existing surface or structure to project onto, and every surface and structure provides a different set of creative and technical challenges that we need to consider when projection mapping.
We aim to provide the best possible service at a price that will make you, your audience and your customers happy.
Please contact us with your specifications and needs, and we will work closely with you to provide our projection mapping services at a price and quality that we are both happy with.

In most cases, we can’t run full on-site trials ahead of an event, but we keep you closely involved throughout the creative process. During the design and pre-production stages, we provide detailed pre-visualisations that show how your content will appear in context. These previews give you the opportunity to review, refine and approve the final look before installation.
We use professional-grade video projectors tailored to each site’s scale, lighting and throw distance. For larger surfaces, multiple projectors may be blended together to create a single, perfectly aligned image.
Alongside the projection hardware, we provide all supporting technology, including media servers, show control systems and audio equipment, ensuring every element runs smoothly and delivers maximum visual impact.
Whilst we have projectors of all different brightnesses and intensities, the ambient light of the environment is the main consideration when projection mapping. Outside: Projection mapping in the middle of the day is not possible. For each square metre of an unshaded surface, our sun puts out 127,000 lumens – which even the brightest of projectors simply cannot compete with!
We generally recommend that the projections not begin until after sunset. We will also need to consider ambient street and building lighting, as these will impact the strength of the projections too.
Inside: If the inside environment has controlled lighting (lights can be turned off and blinds can be closed to block as much daylight as possible), indoor projections will work all day.
Most indoor venues can accommodate projections.
